A family in the air
J. Cody Whitten grew up in the Brazos Valley working his father's Ag Aviation business, alongside brothers Brett (a crop duster) and Beau (a Navy pilot who now flies for Southwest Airlines). Aviation wasn't just the family trade — it was the air they breathed.
From the kitchen, not the cockpit
In 2001, J. Cody opened J. Cody's Steaks & BBQ and found his real calling behind a pass instead of a throttle. For years he dreamed of a proper sit-down restaurant that matched the warmth and character of the Brazos Valley itself.
A cold Saturday in February
In February 2019, a chance lunch with a couple of Old Army Aggie pilots pointed J. Cody toward something unexpected: the vacant General Aviation Terminal at Easterwood Airport, sitting quiet behind old oak trees on the private side of the field. By midnight, he'd sent the email that set it all in motion.
Building through a pandemic
Construction started in December 2019, then a pandemic arrived — but J. Cody kept building. The concept sharpened into what he calls "Relaxed Elegance": a four-bladed propeller believed to have come from the Enola Gay above the bar, and Cherry Vollert's 25-foot B-17 mural on the wall of the private dining room. Gate 12 opened on December 10, 2020.
Right where we belong
Today, guests watch military helicopters fuel up beyond the bar as the sun drops behind the control tower. OpenTable named Gate 12 one of the best overall restaurants in Central Texas — a distinction J. Cody received with characteristic humility: "I was amazed and honored — we are brand new."
